Three for the Weekend: Design, smuggling, and music

Take note – story published 7 years ago

What to see and hear during the weekend? We have our weekly recommendations right here.

Baltic Sea Design

Roundabout Baltic - an exhibition on the design of Baltic Sea countries - is on show at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.

Pieces from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden are featured in the exhibition, however curator Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka said that what country the artists are from is not of importance--it's rather the way they think.

Smuggling in Rīga

The fascinating Žanis Lipke Memorial (open Satruday 12 noon - 6 p.m.) in Rīga dedicated to the eponymous rescuer of Jews during the second world war is hosting an exhibition on smuggling, which turns out was the morally dubious vocation of the future hero during the inter-war period.

Its title - Spirits. Silk. Lace - alone limns a rather louche picture.

Beautiful songs for sad people

Estonia-based Belgian guitarist Jonas Van den Bossche will perform on Friday at the Hāgenskalna Komūna bar in Rīga's bohemian Āgenskalns neighborhood - which might be described as a place that puts 'hip' into 'hippie'.

He has made something of a name for himself in the local indie/experimental scene.
