Three for the Weekend: Fish, cinema and techno

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Danish cinema, Latvian lampreys and Latvian techno are what constitute this weekend's 'three things to do' list.

Lamprey festival in Carnikava

The slimy, delicious lamprey is a staple for fishermen in Carnikava. Though it seems that the numbers of these fishes are declining, it doesn't stop the town of Carnikava from celebrating a delightfully strange festival dedicated to the jawless, suction-powered lamprey.

The festival starts on August 20 and continues throughout the day. Compete in the lamprey eating contest; have a sip from the 400-liter lamprey soup prepared by local councilmen; walk to the place where the Gauja river meets the sea, and perhaps the lamprey king, a staple at the festival, will grant you a wish or two.
