‘Valentina’ online on Opera Platform

Take note – story published 8 years ago

The story of Valentina Freimane, the legendary theatre and cinema scholar and Holocaust survivor compellingly reworked into the opera ‘Valentina’ by Arturs Maskats and Liana Langa for the Latvian National Opera (LNO) can be viewed in full on the genre connoisseur’s website TheOperaPlatform.eu as of Saturday.

Composer Maskats' and librettist Langa's work made its world premiere at the LNO in December 2014 and was one of the centerpiece occasions of Latvia’s Presidency of the Council of the EU Cultural Program at its exclusive production at Berlin’s Deutsche Oper on May 18-19.

The LNO staged the two-act opera there under the joint patronage of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkēvičs and Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The full video will be available online HERE for six months until December 1.

The Opera Platform was created jointly by fifteen of Europe’s leading opera houses. Its mission is to feature performances, fragments and excerpts, annotations, interviews and backstage documentaries. It launched online on International Opera Day, May 8 of this year.

As LNO board member Daina Markova told Latvian Radio, “this of course is huge international publicity for the opera and the chance to attract foreign audiences, not just for our national opera house, but for Latvia as a whole, we hope very much.”
