Latvia develops healthy food quality label

The Latvian Association of Dietitians and Nutrition Specialists (LDUSA) has created a quality label “recommended by nutritionists”. As Guna Bīlande Chairman of the Association's Board of Directors, told Latvian Radio, there is considerable interest from producers in obtaining this label.

The association explained that this label will be a sign that the specific foods in Latvian stores are healthy and their composition corresponds to the recommended amount of salt, sugar, saturated fat, etc. nutrients in products.

Bīlande explained: “Food labels bear various health and nutritional claims - “reduced salt,” “reduced sugar,” “high protein,” “low fat,” “with vitamin C.” However, it may be that more sugar has been added to a low-fat product to improve taste and texture, for example, and as a result such a product is not actually worth more than its “unimproved” version. Products labeled with the LDUSA quality label will help you to navigate the wide range of products and choose valuable and healthy products, thus promoting and enhancing the health literacy of Latvian residents.”

The association said the quality label criteria for each food group were developed by a team of LDUSA experts based on local and international health promotion guidelines.

The quality label is intended to be given to different product groups, such as cereals and their products, dairy products, pantry products and other groups, with the list expanding further in the future.
