Sklandrausis, a sweet carrot and potato hand-pie on rye base, is one of the Latvian specialties guaranteed European Commision's protection in the European Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) list, along with rye bread, gray peas and eel lampreys. Not only is it a pleasure for tastebuds, but also a rich cultural offer, and important for the preservation of tradition and the multiplication of cultural and historical heritage.
Several years ago, at the first Sklandrausis festival, the treat disappeared rapidly – within an hour, so bakers in Dundaga and elsewhere are actively working to make the flavor adventure available to everyone on Saturday, July 22.
During the festival, various activities, exhibitions, and concerts are planned at Dundaga Church, at the open-air stage and in the palace courtyard.
"This will be the day when the sklandrausis of many cooks can be enjoyed. The makers come from all of Kurzeme. It will be a unique opportunity to learn to bake sklandrausis in a workshop run by wonderful bakers," said Dundaga Culture Palace director Baiba Dūda.
