July will show damage extent to Latvian potatoes, says expert

The situation with potato harvest varies greatly among Latvia's regions is very different, and July will be crucial, said Māris Narvils, senior horticulture expert at the Latvian Rural Consulting and Education Center, in an interview with Latvian Radio on June 30.

“The differences in rainfall amount are very large – there are places where even too much precipitation has occurred; there are places where there has been rain but wetted only the surface of the soil, so it is dry; and there are places where it has been very sad and there has been no rain has been for months, potatoes have only been able to partially sprout or have failed to sprout at all," Narvils outlined the overall situation.

There are relatively few places where rain has been sufficient.

Narvils said that the storm zone is coming and what it will bring in the coming weeks will be quite crucial for the Latvian potato harvest.  The potato harvest will also be affected by the extent of the damage by the Colorado beetles.

The situation in fruit and berry orchards is not encouraging either, as not only drought has had a negative impact on them, but also spring frosts. Blackcurrants will be “very meager” this year, said Narvils.
