Daugavpils Fortress is an area of 150 hectares, a unique monument to architecture and cultural history of national importance. It has now entered the LPMA with fortress status.
The fortress of Daugavpils a neighborhood of the city, and it is also the most popular tourist attraction in Daugavpils. Especially with future projects and renovation, it is a two-day tourism object.
The city of Daugavpils has entered LPMA as the 99th participant. Latgale as a whole is not active in this cooperation, the joint agreement with Daugavpils is also a new step in the activities of the association itself, LPMA Chairman Roberts Grīnbergs said.
"Our association is very flexible about that. As well as castles and estates, our association has castle ruins. Then, right now, there's a new step taken with the fortress. It is such a historic fortification structure that Daugavpils stands out greatly on the Latvian scale. This cultural and historical heritage must be told, reflected, and promoted not only in the context of Latvia, but in the context of the Baltic as a whole."
It will be mutually beneficial cooperation, Grīnbergs said.
"We have been planning cooperation for the next five years. Various joint projects are envisaged. The association organizes annual tourism development promotion campaigns "Let's visit Latvian castles and manors" and "Night of Legends", in which Daugavpils Fortress will also have the opportunity to participate in future," Grīnbergs explained.
Daugavpils Fortress is developing, projects are being carried out. Currently, Daugavpils City Council Chairman Andrejs Elksniņš says.
"A program for the reconstruction of the garden of Daugavpils Fortress has already been approved. Construction work could begin this year and be completed within a year. As a result, we will tidy up the fortress garden and reconstruct the fountain in the middle of the garden. Then the plans include tidying up a former war hospital room and also restoring the Jesuit school. It would be a unified cultural space and environment," the mayor of Daugavpils noted.
