Video: How the Soviet monument in Rīga was toppled

Take note – story published 1 year and 3 months ago

Exactly a year ago, on August 25, 2022, the central object of the Soviet 'Victory' monument complex – the huge obelisk – was toppled in Rīga, Uzvaras Park, after a lot of debate what to do with it.

The monument, centered on a 79-meter-high obelisk with five faces of varying height, was unveiled in 1985 but fell on August 25, 2022, half a year after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Two more days before, the sculptures of soldiers in the monument complex were toppled, and a day later a statue of a woman's image was also toppled.

It was Russia's war against Ukraine that raised the issue of the demolition of this and other monuments.

The Saeima adopted a special law to remove sites glorifying the Soviet and Nazi regimes in Latvia until November 15, 2022.

The short-term plan is to create a youth recreation and sports area in the park.

Below you can watch the LTV's news broadcast of the day, showing from various angles what the toppling looked like.
