Approximately two million people joined hands, forming a chain of over 600 kilometers through Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, in peaceful protest against the Soviet occupation.
The biggest achievement of the protest campaign was getting the USSR to admit to past crimes. The USSR acknowledged the existence of the 1939 Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact and declared it invalid. It was one of the most important steps towards the restoration of independence in the Baltics.
32 years ago on this day, people in 🇱🇻 🇪🇪 🇱🇹 joined hands to bravely and peacefully call for independence, freedom and self-determination of #BalticStates. An outstanding example of democracy, solidarity & individual responsibility, which shall never be forgotten. #BalticWay pic.twitter.com/bnnipZmuhF

Year after year, the event is remembered both privately and in public. This year, one of the most controversial events is the 'Baltic Way 2021' whose organizers state their first aim as 'freedom to vaccinate'. The event has created tension on social media, with supporters of the idea on one side and condemners on the other.
Two years ago, when the Baltic Way celebrated its 30th anniversary, LSM published a comprehensive story about the historical day. You can check it out here, to find out more about this monumental event impacting the lives of many.
