Latvians like to pop on some pop, survey shows

In Latvia, more than 90% of the people surveyed listen to music every day and the favorite genre is pop, according to a survey conducted by the Latvian Association of Artists and Producers (LaIPA) and sociological research agency “Kantar”.

38% of the 1000 participants indicated pop as their preferred genre, followed by rock music (16%), schlager (8%), electronic (7%) and classical (6%).

The study is carried out annually to monitor the wishes and habits of Latvian residents in the selection of music.

An absolute majority of those surveyed listen to music every day (93%) but only 23% spend money on music. Of those who have spent money on the purchase of music, half have committed up to €10 a year for that purpose. 46%, however, agree that use of intellectual property should be rewarded fairly.

44% of people listen to music in the car or other vehicle, while 32% listen to music at home.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, music habits have not been affected for 82% of the respondents, whereas 11% of the respondents listened to music more and 7% less.  Young people aged 19 to 24 have listened to more music during the pandemic (especially pupils and students).
