Scramble for tickets to Tampere for epic Latvia-Canada hockey clash

Latvia's marvellous win over Sweden in the IIHF World Championship quarter-final on May 25 has created just one problem – an infinite demand for tickets to Tampere, Finland for the semi-final on Saturday, but a finite number of tickets available.

Nevertheless, everyone is doing their best to get as many Latvian hockey fans heading north as possible with the Latvian Hockey Federation and national airline airBaltic announcing special flights from Rīga at standardised prices.

airBaltic announced extra flights from Rīga to Tampere on May 27, 28, and 29. The ticket price is set to be EUR 75 one way or EUR 139 round-trip, and tickets are already available at www.airbaltic.com. The flight schedule is especially adjusted, so that fans do not necessarily have to book a hotel. Additional charter flights will be provided by the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation for May 27 and May 29.

Destination served Date and Time
Riga – Tampere May 27, 2023 at 6:00
Tampere – Riga May 27, 2023 at 23:00
Riga – Tampere May 28 at 8:00
Tampere – Riga May 29 at 01:00

To apply for additional charter flights, provided by the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation from Rīga to Tampere (May 27 at 11:00) and from Tampere to Rīga (May 29 at 11:00), people are asked to contact: [email protected].

Ferries to Finland from Tallinn, Estonia are also likely to see a lot of Latvian traffic over the coming hours.

Saturday's game will see Latvia face Canada for the second time in the tournament. In the opening match they were handed a drubbing by the Canadians, but that now seems a very long time ago. After a series of greatly improved performances, another shock of even greater proportions than the one against Sweden is not impossible... is it?

For those not able to make the trip to Finland themselves, the good news is that as usual, LSM and LTV7 will carry the game live. It starts at 14:20 local time.

Alternatively fan zones with big screens will be set up in Dome Square and on the Esplanāde in central Rīga if you'd like the next best atmosphere to being in the Tampere stadium itself. The previous fan zone by Arena Rīga is no longer operating.
