The same two teams met in the final two years ago, when Auda caused an upset against the favorites by winning 1:0, and it looked like history would repeat itself on Wednesday – especially when RFS found themselves on the wrong side of a 2:0 scoreline after just 17 minutes with Auda totally dominant in the early stages.
However, RFS pulled one back just before the break and that – plus a probable dressing down at half time – roused them to action. Nevertheless, Auda held out until the 84th minute before RFS finally regained parity. Regular time ended 2:2, meaning extra time would decide the cup winners.
Having come so close to a regular-time victory, it was hard to Auda to regain their momentum and extra time brought two more goals for RFS – a somewhat flattering scoreline in the end.
Nevertheless, it means RFS' hopes of achieving a league and cup double remain odds-on for completion. They need only a draw in the penultimate game of the season at Grobiņa to secure the league championship, and can only be overhauled if they lose their last two games and rivals FC Rīga win both of theirs.
