Latvia lose to Norway, quarter-final spot in the balance

Take note – story published 3 years and 6 months ago

The Latvian national ice hockey team lost 3:4 to the Norwegian national team after a shootout finale Friday, after the scores remained level at 3:3 during regular time and overtime. The result that places their hopes of making the latter stages of the IIHF World Championships in the balance.

Latvia's historic win over mighty Canada in the first game only throws disappointing shootout losses to unfancied Kazakhstan and now Norway into sharper relief and leaves them increasingly reliant upon other results helping their cause. Nevertheless they do at least take a point away from the Norway game as a result of the scores being tied at the end of regular time.

Things don't get any easier from here on, with games against reigning champions Finland and in-form Germany set to finish Latvia's fixtures in the round-robin stage of the tournament. Finland currently top the group with Germany in second place.
