At the end of regulation time the score was 2:2. Finland took the lead in the first period, Canada equalized in the second period and both teams scored one goal in the third period, forcing overtime. The Finns seemed to be exerting more control as overtime continued, but a rare mistake led to a two-on-one break from which Canada capitalised and replaced the Finns as world champions.
Nick Paul will go down in history as scorer of the championship-winning goal.
It now seems a very long time since Canada lost to Latvia in the opening match of the tournament.
Earlier in the day the United States secured the bronze medal, defeating Germany 6:1 in the third-place playoff.
