Latvian Weightlifter Suharevs regains Junior European Champion title

Ritvars Suharevs won the gold medal at the European Junior Weightlifting Championships in Romania on Thursday in the 81 kg. and under weight category, according to organizers. Since 2015 Suharevs hasn't been left without a medal in any continental junior championships, but last year he was the silver medalist.

In two disciplines - snatch, and clean and jerk - Suharevs lifted a total of 348 kg, which secured him the victory with a five kilogram lead over the silver medalist Ihar Lozka from Belarus. Armenian Rafik Harutyunyan won bronze with 340 kg.

Suharevam would have secured his victory in snatch in his first try by lifting 153 kg, moreover he got into the battle when almost everyone had already gone. Oh his second try at 158 kg. the  bar didn't surrender, but on the third try he convincingly lifted the bar.

In clean and jerk the junior world champion successfully lifted 185 and 190 kg. Having already secured the all-around gold medal Ritvars unsuccessfully attempted to lift the 197 kg bar. 

Later on Thursday Armands Mežinskis won 4th place at the Junior Championships in the 89 kg and under weight category, lifting a total of 345 kg (153 kg + 192 kg). In clean and jerk Mežinskis won the bronze medal.

The junior competition includes athletes up to 20 years old.

As previously reported, Rebeka Koha won gold in the European Weightlifting Federation's U-23 Championships in Bucharest, all other contenders in the 59 kg and under weight category. Daniela Ivanova received 8th place in European Junior Championships in the 64 kg and under weight category.
