The Latvian men's basketball team celebrated a convincing victory in the first game of the second stage of 2023 World Cup qualifying against Turkey on Thursday at Arena Rīga. Latvia defeated Turkey 111:85 in front of a sell-out crowd.

NBA star Kristaps Porziņģis stood out for the winners with 22 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Dāvis Bertāns scored 17 points, Rihards Lomažs added 15 points, and 11 points were accounted for by Roland Šmits.

The win keeps Latvia top of their qualifying group (Group 1). A win for Turkey would have seen both teams level. Latvia next faces Great Britain on Sunday. Though it is an away fixture, Latvia will go into it full of confidence and can realistically expect to return with all the points to remain front-runners for qualification.
