Latvia's ice hockey heroes climb international rankings

Take note – story published 5 years ago

Despite going into the world ice hockey championships as unfancied outsiders, the excellent performances the Latvian team put in on the way to a narrow quarter final loss to eventual champions Sweden has earned them a hike in the IIHF world rankings.

Following the conclusion of the tournament May 20, in which Sweden retained the title after a shoot-out victory over Switzerland, Latvia's world ranking has risen from 13th place to 11th in the world.

In the tournament itself, Latvia was handed an even better 8th place ranking by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
