On January 7 the Latvian Cycling Federation named Krists Neilands and Vanesa Buldinska as the best Latvian cyclists of 2019.

Road racing cyclist Neilands received the title for the first time in his career. Last year he won five International Cycling Union (UCI) races including the Grand Prix de Wallonie, both stages and general classification at the Tour de Hongrie, as well as the individual classification at the Latvian Championships.

Neilands joined the Israel Cycling Academy’s “Israel Start-Up Nation” World Tour team in 2019. Last year he was also named the Rising Star at the Latvian Annual Sports Awards.

BMX cyclist Buldinska placed 12th at the European Championships last year and reached 13th position in a BMX Supercross World Cup stage, as well as placing third in a European Cup stage.

The award for best new cyclist went to European BMX B16 champion Edvards Emīls Liberts.

The best Latvian cyclists were chosen according to the fan vote on LSM.lv and votes from the Latvian Cycling Federation, BMX clubs, and road racing and MTB coaches.

As reported in 2016, a survey by SKDS pollster revealed Latvians' favorite sports, with cycling being a clear winner as 22% of respondents said they are engaged in this pastime, reported LSM. Cycling was followed by swimming (15%), doing sports at the gym, including aerobics and yoga (9%), and skiing, including snowboarding (7%).
