Latvia's Kristaps Porziņģis is New York's Athlete of the Year, according to the New York Post.

The Post, in its wrap-up of the year 2016, says that "2017 dawns with intrigue" as teams from New York will be capable of vying for the highest achievements after a five-year drought.

Placing Porziņģis, who is playing only for what is his second season in the NBA, was named the best athlete of the year in close competition with footballer Odell Beckham Jr.

"By himself, [Porziņģis] has planted seeds of hope among Knicks fans, whose optimism had lain barren for so many years," said the Post.

In 31 games this season, Porziņģis is averaging 20.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, as his Knicks are currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 16 wins and 15 losses.

Porziņģis was named Latvia's Athlete of the Year last week.
