The Rimi Riga Marathon is planned to take place on October 10 and 11, organizers announced Tuesday, May 12.

Depending on possible national constraints, the 30th anniversary marathon in the capital city will be organized as usual or through an application if the epidemiological situation is not favorable.

The Children's marathon and Family Run are scheduled for October 10, whereas the following day will have the marathon, half-marathon, 10 km and 6 km run. Everyone who completes a distance will receive a commemorative medal.

Aigars Nords, organizer of the Rīga Marathon, acknowledged that pandemic-related restrictions might call for innovation. If restrictions are completely lifted, the anniversary marathon will take place as usual. If restrictions are in place, organizers will adapt to the circumstances.

"For the first time in the history of the event, the marathon could also take place in virtual environment. The participants may be offered to complete the marathon individually, entering the distance and time in a specially designed application," said Nords.

Runners who have registered for the 2020 marathon but will not be able to participate on the newly set dates are offered to transfer the membership to 2021 or re-register the application to another runner. By June 12, it can be done for free on the runner's online profile.

On the original scheduled marathon dates, May 16 and 17, organizers call for runners to still complete a distance of their own accord, take photos from their favorite locations and share them on social media to create a sense of community even when running separately.

Information on the upcoming marathon can be found on the Rimi Riga Marathon website.
