Latvia's second-ranked women's tennis player Aļona Ostapenko on Sunday defeated Germany's Julia Goerges in straight sets in the final match of the Luxembourg Open.

Ostapenko, who beat Goerges 6-4, 6-1, won her first WTA title in two years and the third of her career, which includes her memorable triumph at the French Open 2017 and the Seoul WTA International 2017.

Ostapenko, currently 63rd in the WTA ranking, played as a wildcard entrant in Luxembourg, while Goerges, 26th in the WTA ranking, was second seed at the tournament.

Ostapenko has earned 280 WTA points for her victory in Luxembourg, which brings her back to the Top-50 of the world's best women's tennis players, having previously been in the top 10.

It is her first title in over two years and after a tough start to the 2019 season, she ended it in style, reaching the final of a tournament in Linz last week.

"Of course it’s great to finish the season with winning a title, especially in the last tournament," Ostapenko told the press, after her victory, reported the WTA website.

"I enjoyed this week so much, and I think I played really well today. I just like to finish the year this way."

She also said that working with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli during the last two weeks had helped raise her game. which is always exciting but can be inconsistent at times.

"[Bartoli is] supporting me so much and bringing so many positive things, and just trying to keep me as positive as possible," said Ostapenko. "Sometimes I can go negative if things don’t go my way, but these two weeks she’s been helping me so much, and I’m glad to have her by my side," she said.
