Ventspils switches off decorations due to electricity price hike

Because of the extremely high electricity rates on Friday, January 5, in Ventspils, most Christmas decorations and building facade lights have been switched off, Ventspils public relations specialist Laura Feldmane said.

The price of electricity on the stock exchange hit a record high on Friday, January 5. From 7:00 electricity price rose, approaching 1,000 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh) but at 8 reached €1,478.91 per MWh, or €1.79 per 1 kilowatt hour (kW), including value-added tax. Over the day, it will fluctuate between €800 and €1,000 per MWh and only return to the €200-300 mark in the evening.

Given the unprecedented rise in electricity tariff, it has been decided to unlock the switch off decorations that consume electricity the most.

Ventspils began preparing for Xmas in November, installing strings of lights. This year, the light strings have a combined length of more than 38 kilometers, comprising a total of 3,200 light bulbs. The municipality has planned EUR 72,600 for the Christmas design.
