Corruption cops investigate Rīga's waste management

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has started an inspection in relation to the submission of Riga City Council deputy Valdis Gavars regarding possible corruption in waste management in Riga, KNAB confirmed to the portal LSM.lv on Wednesday, December 6.

In the submission, Gavars asked KNAB to assess possible corruption in waste management in Riga and “special favor towards one of the waste managers of the capital territory – Eco Baltia Vide”.

KNAB confirmed that it has started an inspection of Gavars' application. The KNAB evaluates the suspicions expressed in the submission of Gavars, but does not provide more information during the inspection.

Gavars said that his suspicions are related to the public procurement organized by Riga City Council for the provision of waste removal services in Riga City.

Gavars has asked KNAB to verify whether the suspicions are justified and whether the increase of tariffs for the export of waste has taken place in accordance with the requirements of the Law, without violating the principles of public procurement, principles of the State Administration Law, as well as principles of fair and legal policy, and whether the waste management company Eco Baltia Vide has not been favoured unjustifiably.
