Latvia's electricity rates to be reviewed in December

State aid for households could be extended due to increases in electricity prices, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš said after meeting with the Chairman of the public utilities commission (SPRK). In the meantime, SPRK will review the tariffs in December to decide whether adjustments are needed, Latvian Radio and Latvian Television reported on August 9.

During the talks, the Prime Minister has made clear that unjustified costs are not included in the tariff and the regulator understands its role in defending public interests. As explained by SPRK, the new distribution rates reflect the actual costs of maintaining electricity capacity and distribution. Therefore, citizens are invited to review their electricity capacity and choose the appropriate tariff.

“With this change, we are taking a huge step to support producer companies, especially those with high capacity,” the Prime Minister said. “And if the regulator holds its backbone, defending us as consumers, I am confident that we as a society in this pattern change as a whole will be the winners.”

Kariņš pointed out that support for households would be extended as necessary to meet those in need. On the other hand, SPRK had confirmed that tariffs would be revised in December to see if any adjustments were needed.

As of July 1, electricity distribution and transmission rates increased on average by a third in Latvia by 32% and 36%, respectively. There are people whose bills reflect an amount well above that percentage.

The President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs has announced that in his opinion the new electricity distribution rates do not appear to be proportionate, justified, or wise. In his opinion, SPRK has not performed its function well enough and the decision on the new tariffs needs to be reviewed.

Meanwhile, AS “Distribution Network” (Sadales tīkls, ST) promises to assess the possibility of reducing or canceling the charges for switching the connection load, which is currently EUR 80.
