Saeima hands land to Augšdaugava municipality for industrial park

Latvia's parliament, the Saeima, on November 15 voted to hand over a large parcel of state-owned land to Augšdaugava (Upper Daugava) district for the creation of a new industrial park to stimulate the local economy.

In a third and final reading deputies supported the law, by which the state real estate is handed over to the region for free.

An area of 256 hectares is intended for the creation of the industrial park, which will have large production plants and their functionally necessary technical buildings (warehouses, transport infrastructure, water supply, heat supply infrastructure, etc.). It is planned to house industrial, innovative product manufacturing, transport, logistics, energy and other industry companies.

By handing over the state forest land in Līksna Parish it is intended to promote the development and economic growth of the county and the Latgale region, as well as to increase the quality of life of local residents, the authors of the bill previously stated.

The representatives of the municipality previously emphasized that the creation of the industrial park is essential for improving the competitiveness of the region, emphasizing the favorable geographical location and accessibility of strategically important infrastructure.

However, the real estate will have to be returned to the state if an environmental impact assessment finds that it cannot be used for the creation of an industrial park. Likewise, the real estate or parts thereof will have to be returned if within three years planning documents have not been drawn up, or if they do not meet the goal stated in the law, or if for some reason the project does not get off the ground.
