Tourist numbers still not back to pre-Covid levels in Latvia

According to data published by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) October 16, there were 335,600 foreign and local visitors to Latvia in August 2023 which is 0.3 % less than in August 2022.

However, compared to August last year, the number of nights spent by visitors comprised 611,100, which is 4 % more.

In the first eight months of this year, the number of non-resident and resident visitors comprised 1.7 million, which is 14.2 % more than in the eight months of 2022, however, it is 14.8 % less than in the eight months of 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

In August 2023 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 58.2 % or 195.2 thousand people, which is 5.3 % more than in August a year ago, but 26 % less than before the pandemic in August 2019. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to August 2022, has grown by 8.2 % and comprised 360.2 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.8 nights at the tourist accommodation.

The majority of non-resident visitors came from Lithuania (44.2 thousand), Estonia (24.4 thousand), Germany (22.8 thousand), Finland (12.6 thousand), United Kingdom (9.5 thousand), Poland (8.8 thousand) and USA (7.2 thousand).

Most non-resident visitors were hosted in Riga – 58.3 %, Jūrmala – 13.8 %, Liepāja – 3.4 %, Sigulda municipality – 3.2 %, Ventspils – 2.5 %, Mārupe municipality – 2.4 % and Cēsis municipality – 2.2 %.

In August 2023 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 140.4 thousand resident visitors, which is 7.2 % less than in August 2022, but 12.7 % more than in August 2019. The number of nights spent by them comprised 250.9 thousand, which is a drop of 1.5 %, compared to August last year.

Resident visitors stayed mostly in Riga (18 %), Liepāja (6.6 %), Jūrmala (6.5 %), Cēsis municipality (6.1 %), Talsi municipality (4.7 %), Kuldīga municipality (4.4 %) and Sigulda, Dienvidkurzeme and Limbaži municipality (4.1 %).
