Latvian natural gas consumption continues to decline

The amount of natural gas consumed in Latvia has decreased by 14.2% in the first five months of this year compared to the relevant period of last year, according to data published by the Central Statistical Bureau on June 26.

During the first five months of 2023, 3,992 terawatt-hours (TWh) of natural gas were consumed in Latvia, while 4,653 TWh of natural gas were consumed in the same period last year.

In May this year, 228,946 megawatt hours (MWh) of natural gas were consumed in Latvia, which is 31.3% less than in May of last year, when 333,096 MWh of natural gas was consumed in Latvia.

This year in January, 1,119 TWh of natural gas was consumed in Latvia, which is 27.1% less than last year, in February – 1,199 TWh, an increase of 9.3%, in March – 1.03 TWh of natural gas, an increase of 1.5%, and in April – 415,398 MWh, which is 38.2% less than in April of last year.

As reported, the amount of natural gas consumed in Latvia decreased by 30.3% last year and represented a total of 8,887 TWh.

Last year, the most natural gas was consumed in December - 1.6 TWh, a decrease of 16.3% compared to the relevant month of 2021.
