Carnikava lampreys win EU Protected Designation

Take note – story published 9 years ago

The European Commission (EC) has approved the addition of lamprey eel from Carnikava on its Protected Designations of Origin list, the EC announced today.

The designation of ‘protected’ “increases the market value of the products of economic operators, by guaranteeing that they are distinguishable from other similar products or foodstuffs,” according to the EC.

The town of Carnikava is proud of its slimy but delicious lampreys, even hosting an annual festival to celebrate the eel-like fish.

Sklandrausis, a Latvian vegetable tart, as well as Latvian rye-bread are also on the list.
