Manufacturing production output fell by 0.6% in September

Data published by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) November 3 show that in September 2020, compared to September 2019, manufacturing production output according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices decreased by 0.6 %. 

Production output decreased in electricity and gas supply - by 22.7 %, with a significant decrease in the volume of electricity produced in combined heat and power plants (CHP) and gas supply to consumers. In turn, in mining and quarrying there was an increase of 21.8 %, which was promoted by favorable weather conditions. Total industrial production output decreased by 2.8 %.

Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the production output is still falling sharply in repair and installation of machinery and equipment - by 33.7 % and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations. Manufacturing output also decreased in manufacture of textiles - by 14.2 %, manufacture of beverages - by 11.3 % and manufacture of paper and paper products - by 10.9 %.

In turn, production output increase was in the manufacture of machinery and equipment - by 11 %, manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products and in three sectors having the largest share in industrial production - manufacture of wood and wood products and manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (growth of 4.1 % in both) and an increase of 1.5 % in manufacture of food products.

In September 2020, compared to August 2020, manufacturing production output according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices increased by 0.8 %. Production output rise was also in mining and quarrying - by 9.1 %, but in electricity and gas supply there was a drop (of 6.9 %).  Total industrial production output increased by 0.5 %.

Manufacturing turnover2

Compared to September 2019, in September 2020 manufacturing turnover, according to calendar adjusted data at current prices, increased by 1.3 %. Turnover increased by 1.5 % in the domestic market and by 1.2 % in exports (including 2.5% in non-euro area, while turnover decreased by 0.4 % in the euro area).

In September 2020, compared to August 2020, manufacturing turnover, according to seasonally adjusted data at current prices, decreased by 0.9 %. The decrease in turnover was in exports - by 2.7 % (including in the euro area - by 7.4 %, but the increase was in non-euro area - by 1.3 %), while in the domestic market the turnover increased by 2.8 %.
