President warns of problems in business environment

Latvia has problems with the business environment and might have to invite guest workers to the country should more people choose to move elsewhere, said Latvia's President Raimonds Vējonis in an interview with LTV's Rīta Panorāma Thursday.

As business is not developing well in Latvia, "it presents politicians with a big question – will we continue to go on the road where people from Latvia keep moving abroad and we have to invite guest workers to Latvia, which would be the worst scenario, because first of all we should provide jobs and remuneration to the people who live in Latvia," said Vējonis.

As Latvian companies like Latvijas Finieris (Latvian veneer) are investing in other countries, the business environment in Latvia is, perhaps, less favorable than elsewhere, said Vējonis.

"That's why not only Latvijas Finieris but several other companies choose to operate in the territory of Estonia rather than in Latvia. Politicians have to make conclusions based on this upon making decisions [..].

Something in Latvia is not right if companies are ready to invest in a country other than Latvia," said Vējonis.
