Tourist numbers picked up in June in Latvia

According to latest data from the Central Statistical Bureau, published August 13, in June 2021 the number of foreign and resident visitors comprised 122.3 thousand, which is 4.1 % less than in June 2020 but 68.9 % more than in May this year.

In accommodation establishments visitors spent 213.7 thousand nights, which is 11.8 % less, compared to June of the previous year, and 51.9 % more than in May.

In June 2021 the number of foreign visitors comprised 20.9 thousand, which is 60.8 % less than in June 2020 and 52.4 % more than in May. The number of nights spent by non-residents has reduced by 62.9 % and comprised 40.4 thousand. In turn, the number of Latvian visitors hosted, compared to June 2020, rose by 36.5 % and comprised 101.4 thousand. The number of nights spent by residents has grown by 30 % and comprised 173.2 thousand.

In the 2nd quarter of 2021 the number of foreign and resident visitors in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 246.9 thousand, which is 44.6 % more than in the 2nd quarter of 2020, therefore, it is 3.2 times less than before the pandemic in the 2nd quarter of 2019.

As compared to the 2nd quarter of the previous year, the number of nights spent by visitors has grown by 22.6 % and comprised 457.8 thousand nights. Visitors spent an average of 1.9 nights at tourist accommodation establishments.

In the 2nd quarter of 2021, the number of foreign visitors out of all visitors in accommodation establishments comprised only 17.5 % or 43.2 thousand, which is 30.4 % less than in the 2nd quarter of the previous year. The number of nights spent by them has reduced by 38.8 % and comprised 97.7 thousand.

The majority of foreign visitors came from Lithuania (6.9 thousand), Estonia (4.5 thousand), Germany (3.9 thousand), Russia (3.5 thousand), Poland (2.4 thousand) and United Kingdom (2 thousand).

Out of foreign visitors 36.6 % or 15.8 thousand came from neighbouring countries – Lithuania (16 %), Estonia (10.3 %), Russia (8.2 %) and Belarus (2.1 %).

In the 2nd quarter of 2021 the drop in the number of visitors from Lithuania and Estonia can be explained with the so-called “Baltic bubble”, which arose in the middle of May 2020, when restrictions for cross-border travel among the Baltic States were lifted – in June last year this enhanced growth in the number of visitors from neighbouring countries. However, this summer residents have more opportunities also to travel to other countries.

Most foreign visitors stayed in Riga (73.5 %), Jūrmala (7.3 %), Liepāja (5 %) and Ventspils (1.4 %).

In the 2nd quarter of 2021 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 203.7 thousand Latvian residents, which is 87.3 % more than in the 2nd quarter of 2020. Compared to a year ago, the number of nights spent by residents has risen by 68.5 % and comprised 360.1 thousand.

Latvian visitors stayed mostly in Riga (18.6 %), Jūrmala (10.3 %), Liepāja (8.1 %), Kuldīga municipality (4.4 %), Ventspils (3.4 %), Daugavpils (3.1 %) and Roja municipality (3 %).

In the 1st half of 2021 the number of visitors in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 378.1 thousand, which is 33.7 % less than in the 1st half of 2020. The number of nights spent by them has reduced by 39.6 % and comprised 718.6 thousand. Out of all visitors hosted 65.7 thousand or 17.4 % were foreign visitors, but 312.4 thousand or 82.6 % were Latvian residents.
