In the 2nd quarter of 2021 the number of foreign and resident visitors in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 246.9 thousand, which is 44.6 % more than in the 2nd quarter of 2020, therefore, it is 3.2 times less than before the pandemic in the 2nd quarter of 2019.

As compared to the 2nd quarter of the previous year, the number of nights spent by visitors has grown by 22.6 % and comprised 457.8 thousand nights. Visitors spent an average of 1.9 nights at tourist accommodation establishments.

In the 2nd quarter of 2021, the number of foreign visitors out of all visitors in accommodation establishments comprised only 17.5 % or 43.2 thousand, which is 30.4 % less than in the 2nd quarter of the previous year. The number of nights spent by them has reduced by 38.8 % and comprised 97.7 thousand.

The majority of foreign visitors came from Lithuania (6.9 thousand), Estonia (4.5 thousand), Germany (3.9 thousand), Russia (3.5 thousand), Poland (2.4 thousand) and United Kingdom (2 thousand).

Out of foreign visitors 36.6 % or 15.8 thousand came from neighbouring countries – Lithuania (16 %), Estonia (10.3 %), Russia (8.2 %) and Belarus (2.1 %).

In the 2nd quarter of 2021 the drop in the number of visitors from Lithuania and Estonia can be explained with the so-called “Baltic bubble”, which arose in the middle of May 2020, when restrictions for cross-border travel among the Baltic States were lifted – in June last year this enhanced growth in the number of visitors from neighbouring countries. However, this summer residents have more opportunities also to travel to other countries.
