Unemployment rate unchanged from January to February

Latest estimates from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) February 20 show that in January 2024 the actual unemployment rate in Latvia stod at 7.1 % – unchanged over the month. Over the year the unemployment rate increased by 0.7 percentage points.

The unemployment rate among women did not change and was 6.3 % while among men it went up by 0.1 percentage points to 8.0 %.

The unemployment rate registered with the State Employment Agency (SEA) was 5.7 %. It has not changed over the month and reduced by 0.6 percentage points over the year. This rate is lower than the actual unemployment rate as not all unemployed persons are registered as such with the SEA.

In January 2024 there were 67.0 thousand unemployed persons in Latvia (29.6 thousand women and 37.5 thousand men), which is 0.6 thousand more than a month ago and 6.5 thousand more than a year ago. During the month, the number of unemployed men grew by 0.7 thousand and of unemployed women did not change.

The SEA calculates registered unemployment rate by using own data on registered unemployed persons and CSB data on active population (employed and unemployed persons) of working age. The actual unemployment rate is estimated indirectly, based on the quarterly Labour Force Survey results compiled by the CSB and SEA monthly data on registered unemployed persons.
