Unemployment rate at 7.5% in Latvia in July

Data of the Labour Force Survey (LFS) published August 19 by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in July 2021 actual unemployment rate comprised 7.5 %, which is 0.3 percentage points less than in June. 

The actual unemployment rate in the country has not been this low since January 2020 (7.4 %). The unemployment rate for females decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 6.1 % in July, but for males by 0.5 percentage points to 8.8 %.

Unemployment rate registered by the State Employment Agency (NVA) accounted for 7.1 % which is 0.3 percentage points less than in June. Unemployment rate decrease may be observed when comparing the data to the July of the previous year – of 1.2 percentage points in actual unemployment rate and 1.5 percentage points in registered unemployment rate.

In July 2021 there were 70.2 thousand unemployed persons in Latvia (28.6 thousand females and 41.6 thousand males), which is 2.7 thousand less than in June and 14.5 thousand less than in the respective period of the previous year when the first emergency situation in the country had been declared for four months. The number of unemployed females has decreased by 0.5 thousand from June to July and the number of unemployed males by 2.2 thousand. Since the second declaration of the emergency situation in November 2020 when a number of on-site services were restricted, the number of unemployed persons has decreased by 5.4 thousand.
