New Unity (JV) deputies have tabled the amendments. These foresee raising the fine imposed on a driver speeding 61 to 70 km/h over the allowed limit from the current range of €240–€460 to €720–€960, as well as a suspension of driver's license for 12 instead of the current six months.
For speeding equally significantly in a populated area, the penalty would rise from the current €360–€460 to €1,040–€1,400 and a suspension of driver's license for 24 instead of the current 12 months.
In the case of speeds exceeding 70 km/h irrespective of the place where the offense was committed and of the type of vehicle, the amendment would provide for a penalty of EUR 2,000 and a suspension of the license for a period of 36 months.
According to the JV, based on information released by the Road Safety Board, more than 500 drivers are penalized each year for speeding by 60 km/h or more above the permitted limit.
"Every reckless act on the road carries risks not just for the driver but for the community around them. Between the beginning of this year and July 23, 72 deaths were registered in road accidents in Latvia, while nearly 200 people were seriously injured. These tragic events have left a permanent impact on hundreds of families. Unfortunately, the existing fines do not provide a deterrent effect. This means that it is necessary to review the current regime," said Saeima Legal Affairs Committee Chairman Andrejs Judins (JV).
