Registration of electric scooters mandatory as of April 1 in Latvia

From April 1, it will be prohibited to ride unregistered electric scooters, and it will be mandatory for riders under 17 (inclusive) to wear helmets, the Ministry of Transport said.

As spring weather sets in, the season of electric scooters begins in the urban environment. In order to promote sustainable mobility of citizens while improving road safety, as well as taking into account injury statistics from road accidents and medical advice, the Road Traffic Regulations set stricter requirements for the use of electric scooters from this year onwards.

Registration of electric scooters is mandatory. Electric scooters are required to be registered by March 31 2024. Participation in road traffic with unregistered electric scooters will be prohibited from April 1 this year. Registration can be done on the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) website electronically or in person.

The amendments to the regulations also apply to self-made or rebuilt electric scooters.

When registering electric scooters, it is necessary to indicate their technical data and to provide the necessary documentation. Registered electric scooters shall be given a unique registration number and a sticker shall be issued which shall be placed in a visible position on the front of the electric scooter on the handlebar.

At the same time, the amendments require electro-scooters aged under 17 to wear a protective helmet and clothing preferably with light reflective elements, such as a reflective vest.
