As reported by LSM, the US Federal Aviation Administration granted Rīga airport category 1 in the summer of this year, which means Rīga airport can start direct flights to and from the USA.
Odiņa said she hoped such flights could be offered either by one of the local carriers or by a US airline in partnership with local carriers.
According to Odiņa, the most requested flights are to New York, so the airport is currently actively working to attract US carriers to operate direct flights from New York to Riga.
“It won't be next year, but in 2026 it could be quite possible that we will have direct flights,” Odiņa said.
The arrival of other new airlines in Latvia is not expected this winter season, Odiņa added.
