This week, Riga City Council Transport Department will start work on the introduction of a 30-kilometer-hour (km/h) speed limit zone in central Rīga, the department said on April 12.

The speed limit zone will be introduced in the area between Brīvības, Tallinas, Aleksandra Čaka, Marijas and Merķeļa streets.

The signs will start to be installed on Thursday, April 13, and will be completed within a week. Rīga municipality calls on drivers to be observant and to take into account the new changes to the traffic organization.

The 30 km/h speed limit zones in the capital city shall be introduced taking into account a number of safety-related factors, for example, street congestion with parked transport, the width of carriageways and sidewalks, the location of educational establishments, visibility of crossings and turns, the intensity of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, and other aspects.
