He said that, following Russia's announcement of partial mobilization, the situation on the Latvian-Russian border is stable. The last illegal crossing attempt on the Latvian-Russian border was detected on August 24.
Ruskulis stressed that the border guard is ready if the number of asylum seekers and illegal border crossings increases.
Ruskulis also said that 12 Russian citizens have requested asylum in Latvia this week. Applications will be examined by the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs. However, Ruskulis added that the Latvian requirements for obtaining the status of an asylum seeker are stringent so one who is simply fleeing mobilization will not get the status.
As reported, the decision on the ban on entry of Russian citizens with tourist visas has been adopted in a concerted manner, in cooperation between Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, and it took effect simultaneously in the three Baltic States on September 19, 2022, and is of indefinite duration.
