Drivers recommended to switch to winter tires

Winter maintenance season has officially begun on state roads on Monday, October 16, and will continue until April 15. Roads can be icy in the mornings, so drivers are asked to equip their cars with winter tires in time, Latvian State Roads said.

As reported, it will be getting colder toward the end of the week in Latvia, so roads can be icy and slippery.

Winter maintenance works on the national road network are carried out by the JSC “Latvijas Autoceļu Uzturētajs” (LAU). The national road network is divided into 19 parts and LAU carries out maintenance work 24/7 based on the actual road surface condition and weather forecasts.

The most effective slippage reduction technology shall be chosen taking into account the surface temperature and type of cover. There are several slippage reduction technologies that are applied in Latvia – wet salt, sand-salt mixture, sand or stone chips, and grooving.

Winter tires are mandatory in Latvia starting December 1.
