Drive slower, get farther as of Wednesday in Latvia

In order to adapt to the changing winter weather conditions, as of Wednesday, October 16, the maximum permissible driving speed has been reduced to 90 kilometers per hour on the entire national road network, said the State Enterprise "Latvian State Roads" (LVC).

The only exception is the Vidzeme motorway, where in very good driving conditions the maximum speed will be 100 km/h also in the winter season. The section of the Vidzeme motorway (A2) from Riga to Sigulda is covered by adaptive traffic management with variable (digital) information signs.

"It should be noted that driving and meteorological conditions can change several times a day during the winter period, including rapidly, so drivers should pay attention to and follow the instructions on the variable information road signs," LVC said.

LVC also reminded drivers that as autumn weather approaches, mornings and evenings become darker and visibility may be impaired by precipitation and fog. Rain and fallen leaves can make roads slippery, and autumn wind gusts can cause broken trees or branches on roads.
