Woman charged for rental car crash possibly caused by stranger

After not finishing a ride on the Bolt Drive app, a woman has been charged over €8,000 by the car-sharing service provider for the repair of a car allegedly damaged in a crash caused by a stranger, LETA reports August 16.

On Facebook, Anna Miesniece claims that on August 23, when she arrived home, she used the app to conclude the journey in the rental car. When she woke up in the morning, she saw on the app that the car in question was continuing the journey.

She tried to end the journey while the car was moving but was not successful. So the woman wrote to the Bolt Help Center and called the Bolt contact number, but it was switched off. The woman's account was suspended the following day. Bolt representatives then contacted the woman and informed her that the car had been found and an investigation had been launched.

A few weeks later, the woman was contacted by the police, who informed her that the car had been found smashed and that a case had been opened against her.

The woman claims that her colleagues can confirm that she was at work that morning and that the car can be seen on the Bolt app in another part of the city. She stressed that she tried to contact the company while the car was moving.

A month later, she received an email from Bolt enclosing an estimate of €8,737.45 for the repair of the car.

Edvīns Kažoks, Bolt Drive's manager in Latvia, explained to LETA that in this case, the client did not contact the State Police (VP) and only gave the information to Bolt's support team several hours after she had completed her journey. During this time, another person may have been using the car, causing the accident, which is currently under investigation by the VP.

Kažoks explained that the Bolt Drive terms of use stipulate that the car hirer is responsible for anything that happens to the car during the rental period. Therefore, Bolt encourages all users to make sure that the car is locked after the journey to avoid any incidents.

If a user finds that the car has not been locked and is being actively used after the journey has been completed, Bolt Drive encourages the user to first contact the police and inform them of the car's location and then inform Bolt Drive Customer Support of the situation.

The VP has started administrative proceedings. The police also received a complaint about the possible theft of the car, the complaint has been registered and is being examined, the police told LETA.
