In Rīga, an approximately two kilometers long section of tram line 5 is being rebuilt in the section from Jūrmala gatve to the terminus at Iļguciems.  Meanwhile on tram line 7 tram line, the tracks are being completely relaid, reported Latvian Radio August 21.

The Latvian capital's public transport company, "Rīgas satiksme" (RS) said that the project is proceeding according to plan, so it is expected that low-floor, easy-access trams to Dole and Iļguciems will be able to run at the beginning of next year.

"There are stages where the construction of the tram stop platforms has not started. On the other hand, the stop platform on Lillijas Street has almost taken shape. Very intensive construction works are currently taking place in the vicinity of Spīķeri and the Central Market," says RS spokeswoman Baiba Bartaševiča-Feldmane.

"Likewise in the area of Maskavas Street. It is a very large-scale project, which also includes the reconstruction of [electricity] substations, because low-floor trams need much more power than the old trams. All [stops] will have raised sections...the passenger will be able to board the tram without using steps," she said.

The management of "Rīgas satiksme" and the newly elected mayor of the capital Vilnis Ķirsis (New Unity) plan to inspect the reconstruction works.
