Later on Friday, the board member Arnis Staltmanis also announced his resignation.
Vingris remains in office until April 27 and Staltmanis until May 2. The Transport Ministry has convened an extraordinary meeting in a week's time, on May 2. The meeting will appoint an acting director until a new director is elected.
A public tender will be announced for the position as per the procedure specified by law.
Vingris took up his duties as chairman of the board of Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas on August 1, 2019. After a total of ten years working on the Rail Baltica project, Vingris submitted a letter of resignation to the Ministry of Transport, the shareholder, citing "personal reasons".
As previously reported, just a day earlier, EDzL terminated the contract with Rail Baltica's regional station designer in Latvia due to insolvency, though no connection to this resignation was mentioned in the company statement on the matter.
Vingris also denied in an interview with Latvian Radio that the reason for his resignation would be delays in the project.
Vingris was previously a member of the company's Interim Management Board and has worked on the overall implementation of Rail Baltica since 2014, when he joined the Rail Department of the Ministry of Transport as the Rail Baltica National Research Project Manager. In 2016, he continued his work as Director of the Project Implementation Department at Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, and in 2019 he was confirmed as Chairman of the company's Management Board.
Over the years companies working on the Rail Baltica project have seen frequent turnover among senior executives. Back in 2018, RB Rail CEO Baiba Rubesa quit, and her successor left a year later along with another boardroom departure. Last year another RB Rail CEO said goodbye.
