Safety audit to be launched on Liepāja Highway

In view of the serious road traffic accidents that took place on Tuesday and Wednesday on the Liepāja highway (A9), Latvian State Roads (Latvijas Valsts ceļi, LVC) will order an emergency safety audit for the section of the Liepāja highway.

LVC noted that serious accidents in recent days occurred at kilometers 80, 90, and 105 of the highway.

Road safety audits are carried out by the Road Safety Directorate and assess how to improve road safety on a given stretch of road.

Information from the State Police on the causes of the three serious accidents will also be important. According to statistics, the most common cause of such accidents is reckless overtaking resulting in a head-on collision.

On Tuesday, June 25, two car accidents with casualties occurred on the Riga-Liepāja motorway in Saldus municipality. One of them, in Blīdene parish, killed three people, and the other, in Zirņu parish, killed the driver.

On Wednesday, June 26, another tragic accident occurred on the same road in Blīdene parish, Saldus municipality, where 2 more people died in a head-on collision between a car and a lorry.
