Airline displays centenary "gift"

Latvian national airline airBaltic on November 9 showed what it described as a "gift" to celebrate the country's centenary.

A large number of people gathered in a hangar at Rīga International Airport where, after various speeches, an airliner with a large stripe in the colors of the Latvian flag was revealed to be the "gift". However, it is only the fact that the aircraft will fly around sporting the special livery that is the gift, not the aeroplane itself.

"Thanks to airBaltic for this gift, which will allow us to look in the sky with pride!” said President Raimonds Vējonis.

airBaltic chief executive Martin Gauss said the idea had been discussed for a whole year by the airline's executives.

Only one plane will be decked out in the special colors, not the whole fleet.
