Freight and passenger transport declined in 2020

Data published by Central Statistical Bureau December 4 show that in the nine months, both freight and passenger transport experienced a drop.

Freight transport

In the nine months of 2020 compared to the nine months of 2019, freight carried in transport by land and pipeline has reduced by 19.7 %, but at ports – by 29.7 %.

71.3 million tons of freights were carried by land and pipeline transport, a decrease of 17.5 million tons or 19.7 % compared to a year ago.

In the nine months of 2020 rail transport freights comprised 17.4 million tons, which is 44.9 % less than in the nine months of 2019. National freights by rail comprised 1.4 million tons – 13.8 % more. In international traffic the volume of freight carried by rail comprised 16 million tons, reduction of 47.4 %. 

Freights by road comprised 52.7 million tons, which is 4.3 % less than in the nine months of the previous year. National freights comprised 41.6 million tons, 0.4 % more. International freights accounted for 11.1 million tons – 18.6 % less. 

1.2 million tonnes of oil products were transported via main pipeline, which is 44 % less.

In the nine months of 2020 freight turnover at Latvian ports was the lowest over the last five years. Freights loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 33.2 million tons, which is 29.7 % less than in the nine months of 2019. Freight turnover at Riga port was 17.6 million tonnes, 26.4 % less, at Ventspils port – 9.6 million tonnes or 41.9 % less, at Liepāja port – 4.7 million tonne or 11.8 % less, but at minor ports – 1.3 million tonnes or 10.2 % less.

Riga International Airport loaded and unloaded 16 thousand tons of freights or 19.3 % less.

Passenger transport

In the nine months of 2020, compared to the nine months of 2019, passenger traffic by all modes of transport has fallen.

Covid-19 pandemic and related movement restrictions determined drop of passenger traffic by all modes of transport.

During the nine months of 2020, the number of passengers carried by land passenger transport comprised 117.1 million passengers, which is 34.5 % less than in the nine months of 2019.

The number of passengers carried by rail transport comprised 10.2 million, a drop of 28.1 %. Number of passengers carried by national transport reduced by 27.5 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport reduced – by 82 %.

66.9 million passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is 35.9 % less than a year ago. Number of passengers carried in national lines reduced by 35.9 %, but the number of passengers carried in international lines reduced – by 35.8 %.

The number of passengers carried by urban electrified transport comprised 40 million passengers, a drop of 33.5 %.

In the nine months of 2020, 406.7 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 51.2 % less than in the nine months of 2019. Passenger turnover at Riga Passenger Terminal comprised 276.7 thousand passengers, which is 55.3 % less, at Ventspils port – 106.3 thousand passengers, a drop of 42 %, but at Liepāja port – 23.7 thousand passengers, 21.1 % less than a year ago. 

The number of passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport constituted 1.8 million, which is 69.6 % less than in the nine months of 2019.
