The government today approved the purchase of electric trains for the state-owned joint-stock passenger rail company Pasazieru Vilciens (PV).

The government has thus approved long-term liabilities to the national budget for a total of €255.889 million.

The new electric train project will include the purchase of 32 new electric trains, necessary parts for a period of five years, maintenance equipment and the construction of a maintenance and a repair center for the above mentioned sum.

The trains will be purchased from Czech company Skoda Vagonka (Skoda).

As part of the project, the state will grant the following subsidies - €36.632 million in 2019, €4.5 million in 2020, €15.053 million in 2021, €125.923 million in 2022, €44.268 million in 2023 and €29.512 million in 2024.

The approval was granted even though the Finance Ministry said it wants to take another look at the purchase.

As reported, part of the EU funds could be redirected from a tram purchase in Rīga that failed due to reputation issues related to possible corruption.
