The government allocated €55 million to the construction of state roads, which will allow 31 road sections to be restored this year, covering 270 kilometers, the Ministry of Transport said March 18.

“Road development investment program in the context of administrative territorial reform” provides for road renewal in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM), in co-operation with the Ministry of Transport, Latvian State Roads and the planning regions, prepared the current list with the priority stages of the country's regional and local roads to be re-constructed and renewed.

The three-year plan covers 105 road sections throughout Latvia of nearly 900 kilometers. This year, the plan foresees around 270 kilometers of road repairs.

In 2021, the total amount of funding allocated for Latvian state road construction works is over EUR 227 million. Last year, EUR 307 million was invested in Latvia's road recovery, making it the "best" year in the last thirty years. The Latvian State road network worked at 248 sites, over 1300 kilometers of roads were restored, including 50 bridges, said the Ministry of Transport.

"Modern road infrastructure improves the quality of life and road safety. It also gives positive impetus to the development of the economy in the regions as it attracts entrepreneurs creating new jobs," the minister of Transport Tālis Linkaits said.

The minister also added that investment in road construction provides orders not only for the road construction industry, but also for raw material producers, designers, and regional hotels and caterers.
