Rīga transport ticket system must change, says vice-mayor

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Rīga vice-mayor Vilnis Ķirsis (New Unity) said October 6 that the expensive e-talons ticket system in public transportation must go, Latvian Television reported.

He said that according to Ernst&Young audit the maintenance of the current system cost 27 million euros a year. It would be possible to maintain a system with 3 million a year, Ķirsis said.

"Where possible, [we must] go away from the expensive system," said Ķirsis, though at the moment there is no alternative. The City Council now has three months until Rīga Transport (Rīgas Satiksme) contract with Rīgas karte ticket system provider ends. There must  be a solution by then.

Rīga Mayor Mārtinš Staķis (Development/For!) said that the new council wants a rapid movement in this matter. "The ultimatum is to get rid of intermediaries which put money in their pockets," said Staķis.

Ķirsis also said that Rīga transport has lost money this year due to the pandemic and people working from home.
