Super-slippery roads cause widespread travel disruption

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Extremely slippery roads in parts of Latvia are likely to cause disruption and cancellations Tuesday on some regional routes, LTV reports, citing the Road Transport Directorate.

In many places, repeated icings and thaws have created particularly treacherous conditions with large patces of black ice presenting a particular hazard, and anyone who has driven any distance outside Rīga is likely to have come across vehicles in ditches in recent hours.

Delays to regional buses are possible all over Latvia today, but in some cases it is simply not possible to provide a full-length trip due to an impassable road, the representatives of the Road Transport Directorate said.

Travellers are advised to check with their carrier for changes or cancellations before travel.

So far, the Road Transport Directorate has received information about public transport delays or complete or partial cancellations due to the condition of the road in Pieriga, Bauska, Liepāja, Cēsis, Valmiera, Tukums, Madona, Cesvaine, Aizkraukle, Ērgļi, Vecumnieki, Suntaži, Madliena, Mengelis, Limbaži  and Ainaži districts.

According to forecasters, temperatures will remain above freezing Tuesday and there will be drizzly rain to make things even more slippery. Fog patches in eastern districts will also add to the hazards on the roads.

According to Latvian State Roads (Latvijas Valsts ceļi), the area around Cēsis is particularly hazardous at present with sand and grit sprinkled on roads being quickly washed away by rain. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution. You can see an interactive map of current incidents and warning areas HERE.
